How to appear in ChatGPT in Spanish: a realistic guide

What you can do so ChatGPT can find and cite your site: crawler access, useful content and brand presence. No promises.

There is no guaranteed way to appear in ChatGPT, but there are steps that increase the chances it can find and cite your site: allow its search crawler (OAI-SearchBot), have indexable pages with useful, original content, keep brand information consistent and have a presence in reliable sources. OpenAI makes clear that placement is not guaranteed.

How ChatGPT search works, according to OpenAI

According to OpenAI's documentation, ChatGPT can search the web automatically when a question benefits from current information, and answers can include citations with links. The company warns that results and citations may be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. It also notes that it sometimes works with other search providers.

On the same page, OpenAI says it ranks results with several factors to help find relevant and reliable information, that placement is not guaranteed and that, to be eligible, you must allow the OAI-SearchBot crawler and traffic from its published IP addresses.

Six practical steps

  1. Allow the search crawler. In robots.txt, allow OAI-SearchBot. Each OpenAI crawler is configured independently: according to its documentation, you can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search and block GPTBot if you don't want your content used to train models. If you use a CDN or firewall, check that it doesn't block the published IPs. OpenAI says changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.
  2. Check Perplexity. Its documentation describes PerplexityBot as the crawler used to show sites in its results and recommends allowing it in robots.txt.
  3. Make your site indexable and clear. Fast pages with accessible, well-organized content benefit every search engine. Google sums it up in its AI guide.
  4. Answer real questions in Spanish. Cover your client's doubts with clear pages, original data and examples from the local market. Generic content that anyone could write adds little.
  5. Keep your brand consistent. The name, description, location and services should match on your site, your profiles and in third-party publications. For local queries, OpenAI explains that it may use an approximate location to give nearby results.
  6. Earn presence in reliable sources. Real coverage in outlets relevant to your audience helps your brand exist beyond your own site. There are correlation studies pointing in that direction (see Ahrefs), although they don't prove causation.

How to check whether it works

Run manual tests with questions your audience would ask, in Spanish and with country variations, and note whether your brand appears and which sources are cited. Repeat periodically: AI answers change and are not identical across users or sessions. Also compare with what happens on Google, where Search Console offers a performance report for generative AI features.

What not to do

  • Promise a client they will appear in ChatGPT.
  • Fabricate mentions with no real value or publish the same text on many sites. Google warns that pursuing inauthentic mentions is not as useful as it seems.
  • Treat GEO advice as magic: Google recommends carefully evaluating third-party services that promise AI results.

Where SEOfy can help

Part of brand presence is built with publications in outlets your audience reads. SEOfy works with Latin American media, adapts each piece to the outlet's editorial voice and offers the AI Visibility package, designed for that goal. Link attributes, labeling and timing are stated per outlet before you order. It guarantees publication, not ChatGPT citations or rankings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get ChatGPT to cite my website?

There is no guaranteed method. Allow OAI-SearchBot, keep useful, indexable pages and build presence in reliable sources. OpenAI makes clear that placement is not guaranteed.

Does blocking GPTBot take me out of ChatGPT?

OpenAI says each crawler is independent: GPTBot is associated with model training and OAI-SearchBot with search. Blocking one does not mean blocking the other.

Does it work the same in Spanish as in English?

The OpenAI documentation consulted for this article does not describe differences by language. The recommendation is to test in Spanish, with your audience's real questions.
