Link building

High-DR backlink or relevant links: which is better

One DR 80 link with no topical connection or several relevant DR 20 links? A simple framework to decide without relying on a third-party metric.

There is no single answer, but as a rule of thumb it pays to prioritize relevance and editorial context over the metric. DR (Domain Rating) is an Ahrefs metric, not a Google one, and it measures the strength of a site's link profile, not whether that site is useful for your topic or your audience. A link from a strong site with no connection to your business rarely delivers what is expected; one from a smaller but related site can make more sense.

What DR really measures

Ahrefs explains that DR shows the relative strength of a site's backlink profile on a scale of 0 to 100, calculated only from link data. It doesn't consider traffic, domain age or topic, and the tool itself clarifies that it doesn't account for link spam: large amounts of low-quality links can even raise DR. It is a useful metric for prioritizing, but it is not a Google signal.

Ahrefs also says that, as a general rule, links from high-DR sites tend to bring more value, and that even a low-DR link can help if it is relevant. That is the opinion of the metric's provider, not independent proof.

What Google says

Google says one of the quality factors is whether other prominent sites link to or refer to the content. It speaks of prominence and of reference to the content, not of an authority number. We have not found a Google guide that quantifies how much a link is worth based on its DR or DA either.

A framework for deciding

Before comparing numbers, answer these questions for each opportunity:

  1. Topical relevance: does the outlet cover your sector or your city?
  2. Real audience: could the people who read it be your customers? This question matters even if the link doesn't pass ranking.
  3. Editorial context: does the link appear inside useful content, not in a list or a footer?
  4. Attribute and labeling: is it sponsored, nofollow or no attribute? Does it match the outlet's policy and Google's guidance?
  5. Site quality signals: original content, clear authorship, traffic that can be verified in independent tools.
  6. Cost and goal: what are you trying to achieve: local visibility, authority in a niche, brand presence?

When each option makes sense

  • A high-DR site with no topical connection can work if your goal is brand presence in front of a broad audience, but don't expect it to help with a topic that outlet never covers.
  • Several relevant, low-DR sites can be better for a local or niche business, as long as they are real sites with an audience.
  • A mix is usually more sensible: a couple of higher-reach outlets and several related to the sector or the city.

Avoid evaluating by a single metric. And be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed effect per link.

How SEOfy helps

SEOfy lets you filter Latin American media by country, province and city, so geographic and audience relevance is a selection criterion and not just a metric. Each outlet is presented with its link attribute, labeling and timing before you order. SEOfy guarantees publication; it does not guarantee rankings, traffic or AI citations.

Frequently asked questions

Are DR and DA the same?

No. They are metrics from different tools (Ahrefs and Moz) with their own methodologies. Neither is an official Google signal.

Can I ignore DR?

You don't need to ignore it, but it shouldn't decide on its own. Use it as an initial filter and evaluate relevance, audience and context.

Not in themselves. The risk comes from artificial or mislabeled links, not from the size of the site.
